{"id":2608,"date":"2025-06-10T12:55:38","date_gmt":"2025-06-10T07:55:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/youdigital.pk\/en\/?p=2608"},"modified":"2025-06-10T12:55:38","modified_gmt":"2025-06-10T07:55:38","slug":"heavy-imports-deepen-trade-imbalance-despite-export-gains","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/youdigital.pk\/en\/2025\/06\/10\/heavy-imports-deepen-trade-imbalance-despite-export-gains","title":{"rendered":"Heavy Imports Deepen Trade Imbalance Despite Export Gains"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"169\" data-end=\"757\"><strong>ISLAMABAD: Pakistan\u2019s export potential is being undermined by its continued dependence on imports \u2014 especially from China \u2014 leading to persistent trade imbalances despite opportunities in global markets.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"169\" data-end=\"757\">According to the Economic Survey 2024-25, released on Monday, the recovery in developed economies had created favorable conditions for exports.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"169\" data-end=\"757\">However, an 11.8% increase in imports outpaced the 6.8% growth in exports, leading to a negative trade balance in goods.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"169\" data-end=\"757\">The government, meanwhile, struggles to effectively harness export potential or reduce its import dependency.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"759\" data-end=\"802\">Export Opportunities vs. Rising Imports<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"804\" data-end=\"1587\">The survey noted that global trade growth is projected to slow to 1.7% in 2025.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"804\" data-end=\"1587\">Pakistan is seeking to strengthen economic buffers by expanding exports and deepening trade ties amid geopolitical and financial uncertainties.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"804\" data-end=\"1587\">A recent breakthrough in resolving import issues related to soyabean and beef products from the United States is expected to enhance trade with one of the world\u2019s largest economies.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"804\" data-end=\"1587\">The textile sector, Pakistan\u2019s leading export industry, heavily depends on cotton imports, especially from the US.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"804\" data-end=\"1587\">In FY24 alone, Pakistan imported over $700 million worth of raw cotton, which is projected to increase further.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"804\" data-end=\"1587\">Service exports showed a 9.3% growth, slightly ahead of the 7.9% growth in service imports, providing some balance in the trade of services.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1589\" data-end=\"1629\">Fiscal Strain and External Pressures<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1631\" data-end=\"2457\">Despite an increase in remittances \u2014 which reached a historic high of $4.1 billion in March \u2014 Pakistan\u2019s financial account recorded an outflow of $1.6 billion during July-April FY25.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1631\" data-end=\"2457\">This contrasts with a net inflow of $4.2 billion in the same period last year, largely due to increased debt repayments and reduced disbursement of foreign loans.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1631\" data-end=\"2457\">Still, the current account swung to a surplus of $1.9 billion \u2014 a significant reversal from a $1.3 billion deficit the year before.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1631\" data-end=\"2457\">This marks only the second time since FY03 that the external sector posted such a surplus.<br data-start=\"2205\" data-end=\"2208\" \/>On the fiscal front, markup payments surged by 17% year-on-year to Rs6.4 trillion due to rising public debt.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1631\" data-end=\"2457\">However, a reduction in the policy rate has allowed the government to save around Rs800 billion to Rs1 trillion in debt servicing costs.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ISLAMABAD: Pakistan\u2019s export potential is being undermined by its continued dependence on imports \u2014 especially from China \u2014 leading to persistent trade imbalances despite opportunities in global markets.
