Before the 2005 Jane Austen adaptation \u2014 which earned her an Academy Award nomination at just 20 \u2014 Knightley felt that many viewed her as a \u201cterrible actress.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"695\" data-end=\"996\">\u201c<em data-start=\"696\" data-end=\"722\">Pirates of the Caribbean<\/em> had already come out, but I think in the public consciousness, I was seen as a terrible actress,\u201d she admitted. Though <em data-start=\"842\" data-end=\"851\">Pirates<\/em> was a massive success, Knightley said <em data-start=\"890\" data-end=\"909\">Pride &amp; Prejudice<\/em> was the first film that achieved both critical acclaim and commercial success for her.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"998\" data-end=\"1351\">She also contrasted the acclaim for <em data-start=\"1034\" data-end=\"1053\">Pride &amp; Prejudice<\/em> with the negative reviews she received for <em data-start=\"1097\" data-end=\"1141\">Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man\u2019s Chest<\/em>, which released around the same time. \u201cI got the worst reviews ever for that, and then also being nominated for an Oscar at the same time \u2014 it was, in my 21-year-old head, quite confusing,\u201d Knightley recalled.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1353\" data-end=\"1699\">Looking back on her debut in <em data-start=\"1382\" data-end=\"1404\">Bend It Like Beckham<\/em> at age 17, Knightley shared how the negative voices of self-doubt were the loudest during her youth. \u201cAll those voices of self-doubt are so loud when you are in your teens or 20s,\u201d she said. \u201cBut in an adult brain that\u2019s got a lot of experience, you can kind of go, \u2018You know what? It\u2019s okay.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1701\" data-end=\"1975\">The actor previously described 2005 as a pivotal \u201cmaking and breaking\u201d year in her career, telling <em data-start=\"1800\" data-end=\"1811\">The Times<\/em>: \u201cThey were the most successful films I\u2019ll ever be a part of and they were the reason that I was taken down publicly.
