ISLAMABAD: England\u2019s men’s cricket director Rob Key has played down the long-term significance of the upcoming selection between Jacob Bethell and Ollie Pope for the No. 3 spot in the first Test against India at Headingley, starting Friday.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Key emphasised that the decision is less about pressure and more about choosing between two highly talented players in peak form.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a good position to be in,\u201d he remarked, reinforcing that this is a win-win situation for England.<\/p>\n

Pope, who recently scored 171 against Zimbabwe at No. 3, has a strong track record in that position, averaging 43.06.<\/p>\n

Bethell, meanwhile, impressed with three fifties in New Zealand when Pope was keeping wicket and batting lower down the order.<\/p>\n

Both have legitimate claims, making the selection a case of picking between form and future potential.<\/p>\n

Key brushed aside criticism over Bethell\u2019s IPL stint, particularly from former captain Michael Atherton, stating that it was part of the player\u2019s growth.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it was brilliant for him,\u201d Key said of Bethell\u2019s IPL experience.

Mark Wood, currently sidelined with a knee injury, could feature later in the five-match series against India.
