UNITED NATIONS: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Sunday condemned the US military strikes on Iran\u2019s nuclear facilities as a \u201cdangerous escalation\u201d and a \u201cdirect threat to international peace and security,\u201d urging immediate de-escalation amid global concern that the conflict may spiral out of control.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cI am gravely alarmed by the use of force by the United States against Iran today,\u201d Guterres said in a statement. \u201cThere is a growing risk that this conflict could rapidly get out of control \u2014 with catastrophic consequences for civilians, the region, and the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

Guterres appealed to all UN member states to uphold the Charter and engage in diplomacy. \u201cAt this perilous hour, it is critical to avoid a spiral of chaos. There is no military solution. The only path forward is diplomacy. The only hope is peace,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

The US strikes, ordered by President Donald Trump, targeted Iran\u2019s key nuclear sites at Fordow, Isfahan and Natanz. Iran confirmed the attacks but vowed its nuclear work would continue. Israel\u2019s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised the US action, calling it \u201ca historic moment\u201d and thanking Trump for \u201cdoing what no other country on earth could do.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, many nations reacted with alarm and called for calm:<\/p>\n

Iraq warned the attacks could jeopardize Middle Eastern stability. Government spokesperson Basim Alawadi said, \u201cThis military escalation constitutes a grave threat to peace and security in the Middle East.\u201d<\/p>\n

New Zealand\u2019s Foreign Minister Winston Peters urged a return to talks and warned against \u201ccritical further escalation,\u201d calling the crisis \u201cthe most serious I\u2019ve ever dealt with.\u201d<\/p>\n

China\u2019s state broadcaster CGTN criticized the strikes, asking if the US was repeating its \u201cIraq mistake\u201d and warning of \u201cunintended consequences\u201d from military action in the region.<\/p>\n

Japan\u2019s Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba convened a high-level meeting to assess regional impact, while newspapers issued extra editions on the attack.<\/p>\n

South Korea called an emergency meeting to assess risks to national security and the economy.<\/p>\n

Australia, which closed its Tehran embassy and evacuated diplomats before the strikes, emphasized that \u201cthe security situation in the region is highly volatile\u201d and called again for \u201cdialogue and diplomacy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, US domestic response was deeply divided.<\/p>\n

Republican leaders, including Senators Lindsey Graham and John Cornyn, backed Trump\u2019s decision as \u201ccorrect\u201d and \u201ccourageous.\u201d House Speaker Mike Johnson said the strikes proved Trump \u201cmeans what he says.\u201d Senate Majority Leader John Thune added he stood with the president \u201cto ensure a nuclear weapon remains out of reach for Iran.\u201d<\/p>\n

Democratic reactions varied. While most raised concerns about presidential overreach and called for Congressional approval, a few, like pro-Israel Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania, supported the move. \u201cIran is the world\u2019s leading sponsor of terrorism and cannot have nuclear capabilities,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

However, critics, including Republican Congressman Thomas Massie and several Democrats, said the strike bypassed constitutional checks. \u201cThis is not Constitutional,\u201d Massie posted, while Democrat Jim Himes stressed, \u201cMy attention to this matter comes BEFORE bombs fall. Full stop.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Senate is expected to vote soon on a resolution requiring congressional authorization for military action against Iran, authored by Senator Tim Kaine.<\/p>\n
