WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump on Wednesday publicly called for the cancellation of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu\u2019s long-running corruption trial, describing the legal proceedings against his closest ally in the Middle East as a \u201cwitch-hunt\u201d and urging either dismissal or a presidential pardon.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cBibi Netanyahu\u2019s trial should be CANCELLED, IMMEDIATELY, or a Pardon given to a Great Hero, who has done so much for the State (of Israel),\u201d Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform. \u201cSuch a WITCH HUNT, for a man who has given so much, is unthinkable to me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Netanyahu, indicted in 2019 on charges of bribery, fraud, and breach of trust, has repeatedly denied the allegations. His trial, now in its fifth year, entered a crucial phase earlier this month with his first appearance for cross-examination in a Tel Aviv courtroom \u2014 a process expected to stretch over the coming year.<\/p>\n

The Israeli prime minister remains defiant amid legal scrutiny and recent conflict. His government weathered a 12-day war with Iran and rising domestic criticism over his post-ceasefire military actions. Despite the turbulence, Trump\u2019s praise for Netanyahu remains unwavering. \u201cIt was the United States of America that saved Israel, and now it is going to be the United States of America that saves Bibi Netanyahu,\u201d he declared.<\/p>\n
