Lahore: <\/strong>Today marks the 23rd death anniversary<\/strong> of the celebrated poet, writer, and intellectual Jon Elia<\/strong>, a towering figure in Urdu literature.<\/p>\n

Jon Elia was renowned for his unique ability to express both in prose and poetry<\/strong>, breaking away from traditional literary conventions. His unconventional style earned him the label of a maverick poet<\/strong>, whose works defied norms and left an indelible mark on Urdu literature.<\/p>\n

Born on December 14, 1931<\/strong>, in Amroha, India<\/strong>, Jon Elia was a polyglot, fluent in English<\/strong>, Arabic<\/strong>, and Persian<\/strong>, which enriched his writing. His seminal works, such as “Shayad”<\/em>, “Goya”<\/em>, “Yani”<\/em>, and “Lekin”<\/em>, remain iconic contributions to modern Urdu poetry.<\/p>\n

Elia’s debut poetry collection, “Shayad”<\/em>, published in 1991<\/strong>, is often hailed as a literary milestone, setting the stage for a new era in Urdu verse. Over his lifetime, Elia composed nearly 50,000 verses<\/strong> and translated over 60 rare and significant works<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Jon Elia passed away on November 8, 2002<\/strong>, but his poetic genius continues to inspire generations.
