The timing and venue for his funeral prayers will be announced later.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"454\" data-end=\"738\"><strong data-start=\"454\" data-end=\"481\">Born on August 14, 1939<\/strong>, Wattoo began his political journey in <strong data-start=\"521\" data-end=\"529\">1983<\/strong> when he was elected chairman of the <strong data-start=\"566\" data-end=\"592\">Okara District Council<\/strong>. Just two years later, he entered the <strong data-start=\"631\" data-end=\"650\">Punjab Assembly<\/strong> and was appointed its speaker, marking the beginning of his prominent political career.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"740\" data-end=\"981\">In <strong data-start=\"743\" data-end=\"751\">1988<\/strong>, Wattoo returned to the Punjab Assembly as an independent legislator before joining <strong data-start=\"836\" data-end=\"854\">Nawaz Sharif&#8217;s<\/strong> <strong data-start=\"855\" data-end=\"881\">Pakistan Muslim League<\/strong> (PML), which was part of the <strong data-start=\"911\" data-end=\"944\">Islami Jamhoori Ittehad (IJI)<\/strong>, and was once again elected speaker.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"983\" data-end=\"1215\">During the <strong data-start=\"994\" data-end=\"1002\">1993<\/strong> elections, Wattoo won seats in both the <strong data-start=\"1043\" data-end=\"1064\">National Assembly<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"1069\" data-end=\"1088\">Punjab Assembly<\/strong> on the IJI ticket but chose to serve in the provincial legislature, where he was elected speaker for a third consecutive term.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1217\" data-end=\"1500\">Later that year, Wattoo led a successful <strong data-start=\"1258\" data-end=\"1282\">no-confidence motion<\/strong> that ousted <strong data-start=\"1295\" data-end=\"1319\">Ghulam Haider Wyne\u2019s<\/strong> <strong data-start=\"1320\" data-end=\"1329\">PML-N<\/strong> government in Punjab. With backing from the PPP, Wattoo became the <strong data-start=\"1397\" data-end=\"1425\">Chief Minister of Punjab<\/strong>, despite having the support of only a small group of dissenting lawmakers.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1502\" data-end=\"1829\">Wattoo\u2019s association with the PPP ended in <strong data-start=\"1545\" data-end=\"1553\">1995<\/strong>, when Prime Minister <strong data-start=\"1575\" data-end=\"1593\">Benazir Bhutto<\/strong> appointed <strong data-start=\"1604\" data-end=\"1618\">Arif Nakai<\/strong> as the new chief minister of Punjab. Wattoo then formed the <strong data-start=\"1679\" data-end=\"1725\">Pakistan Muslim League-Jinnah (PML-Jinnah)<\/strong> after differences with his cousin <strong data-start=\"1760\" data-end=\"1783\">Hamid Nasir Chattha<\/strong>, who sought leadership of the <strong data-start=\"1814\" data-end=\"1828\">PML-Junejo<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1831\" data-end=\"2234\">In <strong data-start=\"1834\" data-end=\"1842\">1996<\/strong>, Wattoo won a <strong data-start=\"1857\" data-end=\"1883\">National Assembly seat<\/strong> under the PML-Jinnah banner but later faced <strong data-start=\"1928\" data-end=\"1954\">corruption allegations<\/strong> that led to a brief imprisonment. After being cleared, he joined <strong data-start=\"2020\" data-end=\"2060\">Pakistan Muslim League\u2013Quaid (PML-Q)<\/strong> during <strong data-start=\"2068\" data-end=\"2098\">General Pervez Musharraf\u2019s<\/strong> era. Known for his close relationship with Musharraf, Wattoo merged his PML-Jinnah faction into PML-Q on the former president\u2019s advice.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2236\" data-end=\"2511\">Following the <strong data-start=\"2250\" data-end=\"2258\">2008<\/strong> general elections, Wattoo contested as an independent candidate and won two <strong data-start=\"2335\" data-end=\"2362\">National Assembly seats<\/strong> in <strong data-start=\"2366\" data-end=\"2375\">Okara<\/strong>. He later rejoined the PPP, retaining one seat while his son, <strong data-start=\"2438\" data-end=\"2458\">Khurram Jehangir<\/strong>, secured the other in a by-election on a PPP ticket.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2513\" data-end=\"2704\">In <strong data-start=\"2516\" data-end=\"2532\">October 2012<\/strong>, he was appointed <strong data-start=\"2551\" data-end=\"2583\">PPP Central Punjab President<\/strong>.
