Her tenure at the ADB saw her rise through the ranks, starting in <strong data-start=\"1195\" data-end=\"1203\">1990<\/strong> as a <strong data-start=\"1209\" data-end=\"1247\">senior financial sector specialist<\/strong>, later becoming the <strong data-start=\"1268\" data-end=\"1287\">manager in 1998<\/strong>. She played a vital role in coordinating the <strong data-start=\"1333\" data-end=\"1365\">APEC Finance Ministers Group<\/strong> from <strong data-start=\"1371\" data-end=\"1387\">1998 to 2001<\/strong> and was involved in several committees that shaped the internal workings of the bank.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1475\" data-end=\"1859\">Dr. Akhtar&#8217;s career at the ADB provided her extensive exposure to <strong data-start=\"1541\" data-end=\"1568\">global financial forums<\/strong>, such as the <strong data-start=\"1582\" data-end=\"1620\">Bank for International Settlements<\/strong> and the <strong data-start=\"1629\" data-end=\"1693\">International Organisation of Securities Commissions (IOSCO)<\/strong>. Her expertise in <strong data-start=\"1712\" data-end=\"1730\">Southeast Asia<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"1732\" data-end=\"1748\">Central Asia<\/strong>, and <strong data-start=\"1754\" data-end=\"1763\">China<\/strong> was widely recognized, and she contributed to several high-level economic reforms and policies.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1861\" data-end=\"2320\">Earlier in her career, Dr. Akhtar worked as an <strong data-start=\"1908\" data-end=\"1970\">economist at the World Bank\u2019s Resident Mission in Pakistan<\/strong> for <strong data-start=\"1975\" data-end=\"1987\">10 years<\/strong>, as well as briefly serving in the <strong data-start=\"2023\" data-end=\"2043\">planning offices<\/strong> of both the <strong data-start=\"2056\" data-end=\"2078\">federal government<\/strong> and the <strong data-start=\"2087\" data-end=\"2118\">Sindh provincial government<\/strong>. Her work covered key areas such as <strong data-start=\"2155\" data-end=\"2181\">macroeconomic analysis<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"2183\" data-end=\"2213\">monetary and fiscal policy<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"2215\" data-end=\"2226\">finance<\/strong>, and <strong data-start=\"2232\" data-end=\"2254\">structural reforms<\/strong> in essential sectors, including <strong data-start=\"2287\" data-end=\"2299\">industry<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"2304\" data-end=\"2319\">agriculture<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2322\" data-end=\"2761\">Dr. Akhtar\u2019s research was instrumental in shaping economic policy in Pakistan. She earned a <strong data-start=\"2927\" data-end=\"2946\">BA in Economics<\/strong> from <strong data-start=\"2952\" data-end=\"2980\">the University of Punjab<\/strong> in <strong data-start=\"2984\" data-end=\"2992\">1974<\/strong>, an <strong data-start=\"2997\" data-end=\"3017\">MSc in Economics<\/strong> from <strong data-start=\"3023\" data-end=\"3050\">Quaid-e-Azam University<\/strong> in <strong data-start=\"3054\" data-end=\"3067\">Islamabad<\/strong>, and a <strong data-start=\"3075\" data-end=\"3095\">PhD in Economics<\/strong> from <strong data-start=\"3101\" data-end=\"3134\">Paisley College of Technology<\/strong> in the <strong data-start=\"3142\" data-end=\"3148\">UK<\/strong> in <strong data-start=\"3152\" data-end=\"3160\">1980<\/strong>. Dr. Akhtar also earned the prestigious <strong data-start=\"3201\" data-end=\"3239\">Fulbright post-doctoral fellowship<\/strong> and was a <strong data-start=\"3250\" data-end=\"3317\">visiting fellow at Harvard University\u2019s Department of Economics<\/strong> in <strong data-start=\"3321\" data-end=\"3329\">1987<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3332\" data-end=\"3768\">Throughout her career, Dr. Akhtar presented her research at <strong data-start=\"3392\" data-end=\"3430\">numerous international conferences<\/strong>, with her work focusing on <strong data-start=\"3458\" data-end=\"3488\">monetary and fiscal policy<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"3490\" data-end=\"3521\">banking and capital markets<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"3523\" data-end=\"3563\">international financial architecture<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"3565\" data-end=\"3595\">regulation and supervision<\/strong>, and <strong data-start=\"3601\" data-end=\"3643\">industrial and corporate restructuring<\/strong>.
