Gilgit : Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Nawaz Sharif has said that he plans to give special attention to major development projects in Gilgit-Baltistan, with a focus on roads, aviation, and energy, and pledged to take the region\u2019s longstanding issues directly to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for federal-level action.<\/p>\n

Addressing a public gathering during his day-long visit to Gilgit-Baltistan, the former prime minister expressed concern over the deteriorating condition of roads and said the state of infrastructure deeply disappointed him.<\/p>\n

He committed to pushing for improved road networks, the expansion and modernization of Gilgit Airport, and urgent measures to address the persistent electricity shortages in the region.<\/p>\n

Nawaz Sharif said he personally observed poor road conditions during his visit, noting the presence of potholes and signs of neglect along key routes.<\/p>\n

Recalling past development initiatives, he mentioned the construction of the Mansehra\u2013Thakot section during his tenure and questioned why the network was not extended further towards Gilgit and Chilas despite earlier plans.<\/p>\n

While stating he did not wish to criticize any government or political party, he said it was difficult to ignore why Gilgit-Baltistan had lagged behind in development despite multiple opportunities.<\/p>\n

He further said that several projects, including hospitals, hydropower plants, power infrastructure, and the Jaglot\u2013Skardu road, were initiated and completed under his party\u2019s leadership, and challenged others to show comparable progress in the region.<\/p>\n

Referring to aviation facilities, he noted that Gilgit Airport had remained largely unchanged since his time in office and should have been upgraded to accommodate larger aircraft, similar to Skardu Airport. He also expressed concern over the limited number of flights operating from the region.<\/p>\n

On electricity shortages, Nawaz Sharif highlighted severe load-shedding despite the region\u2019s natural water resources, saying the situation required urgent correction. While appreciating Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif\u2019s allocation of 100 megawatts of solar energy, he said the current power crisis\u2014lasting up to 20\u201322 hours in winter and 10\u201312 hours in summer\u2014was unacceptable.<\/p>\n

He added that he would raise these issues with the prime minister upon his return and recommend immediate steps for airport expansion and energy improvements, though he acknowledged that outcomes could not be guaranteed.<\/p>\n

He also pledged to visit Gilgit-Baltistan regularly to review development progress.<\/p>\n

His visit comes amid election campaigning ahead of the June 7 polls, during which he met party leaders and candidates. The Election Commission of Gilgit-Baltistan had granted permission for his visit under the electoral code of conduct, while cautioning against any violations.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the region\u2019s political atmosphere remains tense as campaigning intensifies, with opposition parties raising concerns over alleged restrictions ahead of the elections.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
