{"id":8426,"date":"2026-07-02T22:58:20","date_gmt":"2026-07-02T17:58:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/youdigital.pk\/en\/?p=8426"},"modified":"2026-07-02T22:58:20","modified_gmt":"2026-07-02T17:58:20","slug":"maryam-nawaz-calls-for-stronger-prison-reforms-focuses-on-inmates-welfare","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/youdigital.pk\/en\/2026\/07\/02\/maryam-nawaz-calls-for-stronger-prison-reforms-focuses-on-inmates-welfare","title":{"rendered":"Maryam Nawaz calls for stronger prison reforms, focuses on inmates&#8217; welfare"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Islamabad:<\/strong> Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has emphasised the need to modernise Pakistan&#8217;s prison system, saying the protection of inmates&#8217; rights and their rehabilitation should remain a top priority.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at the National Conference on Prison Reforms held at the Supreme Court of Pakistan on Thursday, she said she deliberately chose not to engage in political matters, preferring instead to concentrate on improving prison conditions and the well-being of prisoners.<\/p>\n<p>The chief minister highlighted several reforms introduced by the Punjab government, including video-call facilities that allow inmates to communicate with their families and an emergency alert system aimed at enhancing safety within prisons.<\/p>\n<p>Sharing her own experience, Maryam Nawaz said her imprisonment at Adiala Jail, particularly the time she spent in solitary confinement, gave her firsthand insight into the challenges and hardships faced by prisoners. She added that both she and her family went through significant difficulties during that period.<\/p>\n<p>She observed that prolonged isolation and inadequate prison conditions can severely affect prisoners&#8217; physical and mental health, stressing the importance of providing psychological support, counselling services and effective rehabilitation programmes.<\/p>\n<p>Maryam Nawaz said it is the state&#8217;s responsibility to uphold the fundamental rights of prisoners and ensure a fair and transparent justice system.
