Islamabad : Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday directed federal and provincial authorities to remain fully prepared and maintain a state of high alert to deal with any emergencies arising from the ongoing monsoon rains and flood situation across the country.<\/p>\n

Chairing a high-level review meeting in Islamabad, the prime minister examined the latest situation caused by the monsoon spell and instructed the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to ensure continuous coordination with provincial disaster management authorities and provincial governments.<\/p>\n

He stressed the importance of timely sharing of weather forecasts, rainfall updates, and other relevant information with all concerned departments to enable effective decision-making.<\/p>\n

Shehbaz Sharif assigned Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal the responsibility of leading daily meetings of the Flood Committee to monitor the evolving situation and develop a coordinated response plan.<\/p>\n

The prime minister directed authorities to ensure that early warning systems for Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) and flash floods in northern areas remain fully operational to provide timely alerts and minimize losses.<\/p>\n

Highlighting Pakistan\u2019s vulnerability to climate change, Shehbaz Sharif said that despite contributing only a small portion of global carbon emissions, the country remains among the worst-affected nations facing climate-related disasters.<\/p>\n

He said the government is implementing short-term, medium-term, and long-term strategies to address the challenges posed by climate change and reduce its impacts.<\/p>\n

The prime minister instructed the NDMA and other relevant institutions to take all necessary steps to protect human lives and property during the ongoing monsoon season.<\/p>\n

During the meeting, officials from the NDMA, chief secretaries of all four provinces, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir provided updates on rainfall patterns, damages, and ongoing rescue and rehabilitation operations.<\/p>\n

The meeting was informed that the NDMA is extending full support and resources to provincial governments to manage flooding in northern regions and cope with the heatwave situation in Sindh and Balochistan.<\/p>\n

Officials said another intense spell of monsoon rains is expected in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, and southern Sindh over the next two days, while a fresh nationwide rainfall system is likely during the second week of September.<\/p>\n

Participants were briefed that the Flood Committee, formed on the prime minister\u2019s directives, is holding regular meetings to review the situation and oversee relief, rescue, and rehabilitation activities.<\/p>\n

According to the briefing, the ongoing monsoon season has so far resulted in 110 deaths, injured 360 people, damaged 796 houses, and caused the loss of 376 livestock.<\/p>\n

Officials also cautioned that the ongoing El Ni\u00f1o phenomenon has accelerated glacier melting in northern Pakistan, increasing the risk of GLOFs and flash floods in the coming weeks. Authorities have identified vulnerable areas and started precautionary measures.<\/p>\n

The meeting was informed that immediate steps helped control urban flooding in parts of central Punjab, including Lahore, while drainage operations continue in agricultural areas affected by floodwaters.<\/p>\n

Authorities said the flood situation in Dera Ghazi Khan and surrounding districts is currently under control, while road connectivity has been restored at 106 affected locations nationwide.<\/p>\n

Officials also briefed participants that the National Emergency and Telecommunication Centre, established by the Ministry of Information Technology, is operational and enabling Rescue 1122 teams to receive emergency calls from mobile phones.<\/p>\n

The meeting was further informed that 700 sites have been identified across the country for rainwater storage during the monsoon season, which will help support agricultural activities during dry periods.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
