ISLAMABAD: The first spell of monsoon rains in Punjab has turned deadly, claiming 18 lives, including 11 children, as authorities brace for potential urban flooding in key cities.
On directives from Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) released a detailed Monsoon Alert Fact Sheet highlighting rainfall data, casualties, and current river conditions.
Widespread Rains and Fatalities Reported
Over the last 24 hours, rain fell in a number of districts, including Lahore, Murree, Sheikhupura, Gujarat, Hafizabad, Sialkot, and D G Khan.
Most deaths occurred due to the collapse of weak housing structures.
The downpour has also wounded 57 people and destroyed 27 dwellings.
Flooding Risk Persists as Preparations Underway
PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia confirmed that while all rivers and barrages currently show normal flow, cities like Lahore, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, and Sialkot remain vulnerable to urban flooding.
He assured that emergency arrangements have been finalized and that financial assistance will be provided to the affected families as per government policy.
