Islamabad : Pakistan is marking its 79th Independence Day today with patriotic spirit and traditional enthusiasm, as special ceremonies and activities are being held across the country.
The celebrations are beginning with a 31-gun salute in the federal capital, while provincial capitals are observing the occasion with 21-gun salutes. Special prayers are also being offered after Fajr at mosques across the country for peace, unity, stability and prosperity.
Ceremonies marking the change of guard are being held at Mazar-e-Quaid in Karachi and Mazar-e-Iqbal in Lahore as part of the national celebrations.
In Islamabad, President Asif Ali Zardari is scheduled to hoist the national flag at a special ceremony. Similar flag-hoisting events are taking place at provincial, divisional and district headquarters throughout the country.
Government offices, private buildings, major roads, shopping areas and other prominent places have been decorated with national flags, buntings and colourful lights, giving cities a festive appearance.
A range of programmes, including seminars, exhibitions, cultural events and other activities, have been arranged to commemorate Independence Day. The events are also highlighting the struggle for freedom and honouring the sacrifices made by the leaders and people who contributed to the creation of Pakistan.
The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) has released a special national song, “Mera Pyara Watan Pakistan,” for the occasion. The song reflects themes of patriotism, love for the homeland and national unity.
State-run and private television and radio channels are broadcasting special programmes focusing on the Pakistan Movement, the contributions of its leaders and the sacrifices made by national heroes during the struggle for independence.
Independence Day celebrations are also being held with enthusiasm across Azad Jammu and Kashmir. In Muzaffarabad, the day is being marked with a 21-gun salute, followed by special prayers for peace, prosperity and national solidarity, as well as for the early liberation of Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir.
Flag-hoisting ceremonies are being organised in all districts of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, while the AJK prime minister is scheduled to visit the Martyrs’ Monument and lay a floral wreath in tribute to those who sacrificed their lives for the country.
