ISLAMABAD: US President Donald Trump deployed 2,000 National Guard troops to Los Angeles to control escalating protests against immigration enforcement raids.
The demonstrations erupted following federal immigration raids targeting undocumented migrants in the Los Angeles area, particularly in the suburb of Paramount.
Protesters clashed with federal agents, who used flash-bang grenades and tear gas to disperse crowds near the Los Angeles Federal Building and other key locations.
Rising Tensions and Political Opposition
California Governor Gavin Newsom condemned Trump’s deployment as “purposefully inflammatory,” warning it would only worsen tensions.
Newsom stated there was no unmet need for additional troops, highlighting ongoing coordination between city and county officials.
Meanwhile, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass emphasized the right to peaceful protest but condemned violence and destruction, promising accountability for those responsible.
Protests and Federal Response
Protesters blocked highways with overturned shopping carts and cement blocks, chanting for immigration agents to leave and waving Mexican flags, while some even burned the US flag.
Federal officials reported multiple arrests during the clashes, with FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino pledging to maintain law and order.
White House officials described the protests as “an insurrection against the laws and sovereignty of the United States,” underscoring the administration’s tough stance on immigration enforcement.
