Islamabad :In a pivotal meeting chaired by Chief Justice Yahya Afridi, Pakistan’s Judicial Commission approved the appointments of new Chief Justices for Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Balochistan High Courts. Justice Junaid Ghaffar will take charge of Sindh, Justice Atique Shah leads Peshawar, and Justice Rozi Khan assumes leadership in Balochistan.
The session, however, was not without dispute. Senior Supreme Court Justice Mansoor Ali Shah raised a significant objection, urging that the Supreme Court’s ruling on the contentious 26th Constitutional Amendment must precede these appointments. His viewpoint gained support from Justice Munib Akhtar, members from PTI, and the KP Law Minister.
Further controversy arose when Justice Kamran Malakhail challenged the continued participation of former judge Justice Nazir Langove in the commission, citing a violation of constitutional provisions.
These developments underscore ongoing tensions within Pakistan’s judicial landscape as the commission moves forward with reshaping the high courts’ leadership.
