ISLAMABAD: Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is assembling a specialized team focused on developing “artificial general intelligence” (AGI) — machines capable of matching or surpassing human intelligence.
This ambitious move comes alongside a planned investment of over $10 billion in Scale AI, a leading AI company.
Zuckerberg aims to personally recruit about 50 experts, including a new head for AI research, to accelerate Meta’s progress in this cutting-edge field.
Ambitious AI Goals Amid Challenges
The new AGI team is reportedly being formed partly due to Zuckerberg’s dissatisfaction with Meta’s latest large language model, Llama 4, whose reception and performance fell short of expectations.
Meta also delayed the launch of its major AI model, “Behemoth,” last month amid concerns over its readiness and capabilities.
This cautious approach highlights the high stakes involved in advancing toward superintelligent AI systems.
Competitive AI Landscape
Meta’s push follows moves by rivals such as OpenAI, which are also restructuring and attracting investments to fast-track AGI development.
Scale AI’s founder Alexandr Wang is expected to join Meta’s AGI group once the investment deal is finalized, signaling a major collaboration in AI innovation.
If successful, Zuckerberg’s investment and recruitment efforts could position Meta at the forefront of the AI revolution.
