Islamabad: During a significant press conference, Federal Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar and Information Minister Attaullah Tarar issued a firm warning that Pakistan’s foreign policy must remain insulated from local politics and the “views race” on social media.
The Law Minister emphasized that Pakistan is not only a country but also a nuclear power with a key defensive role in the region. He revealed that, due to the sensitive regional situation, the Prime Minister postponed his planned visit to Russia, underscoring the seriousness with which Pakistan approaches its diplomatic decisions.
Clarifying Article 19, Azam Nazir Tarar stated that while freedom of expression is a fundamental right, legal “red lines” are drawn when it comes to matters concerning Islam, national defense, and relations with friendly countries. Those who cross these lines will face strict legal action.
Information Minister Attaullah Tarar warned media outlets and social media handles against risking national interests in pursuit of higher views. He noted that international observers often interpret media commentary as “state policy,” which could create misunderstandings with Muslim nations and other allies.
The government emphasized that personal opinions, preferences, or political agendas must be set aside when commenting on foreign affairs, and only statements issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will be considered the official stance of the state.
