French Police Detain 79 More Amid PSG Champions League Celebrations

ISLAMABAD: French authorities arrested 79 more people overnight as celebrations following Paris Saint-Germain’s (PSG) historic Champions League victory turned violent for the second consecutive day.

Police chief Laurent Nunez confirmed the detentions, blaming “individuals driven by malicious intent” rather than genuine fans.

Chaos Mars Triumphant Homecoming

PSG’s 5-0 thrashing of Inter Milan—the biggest win in a Champions League final—sparked mass jubilation, with 11.5 million viewers in France tuning in.

However, the festivities were marred by:

  • Over 500 arrests nationwide on Saturday night

  • 200+ torched cars and clashes with police

  • Two deaths (a 17-year-old stabbed in Dax, a scooter rider hit by a vehicle in Paris)

  • A policeman critically injured by a firework

Despite the unrest, PSG’s young squad—hailed by President Emmanuel Macron—received a hero’s welcome at the Élysée Palace, capping their rise from Qatari-backed “galácticos” to homegrown champions.
