ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has strongly criticized the veto of a Gaza ceasefire resolution at the United Nations Security Council, calling it a dangerous signal to the international community.
The resolution, which called for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza, failed to pass after the United States used its veto power, blocking a move supported by all ten elected members of the Council.
Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza
Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Asim Iftikhar, described the situation in Gaza as worse than hell. He highlighted the immense human suffering, with over 54,000 Palestinians killed so far.
He stressed that the ongoing crisis is not just a humanitarian issue but a catastrophe for humanity as a whole. According to Iftikhar, Israel’s continuous violations of international law and efforts to displace Palestinians from their land are deeply concerning, and Pakistan remains committed to supporting the Palestinian people fully.
Pakistan’s Stance and Historical Accountability
During the Security Council meeting, Asim Iftikhar made it clear that Pakistan will persistently advocate for humanitarian aid to be provided in Gaza.
He warned that the failure of the Security Council to reach a ceasefire agreement will be remembered as a dark moment in history.
The United States justified its veto by stating that any measure that could undermine Israel’s security was unacceptable, asserting Israel’s right to defeat Hamas and prevent future threats.
Pakistan’s response underscores its firm position on the Gaza conflict and its call for international efforts to protect human lives and restore peace in the region.
