Govt Requests Rs. 0.10/Unit Tariff Hike Under May Fuel Adjustment

ISLAMABAD The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has proposed a raise of Rs. 0.10 per unit under the Fuel Charges Adjustment (FCA) for May 2025, which could result in a minor increase for electricity users throughout Pakistan on their next bill.

The request is scheduled to be reviewed by the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) in a hearing today.

The CPPA stated that over 12.75 billion units of electricity were produced in May at a generation cost of Rs. 7.49 per unit, compared to the reference cost of Rs. 7.39 per unit.

This Rs. 0.10 variance has led to the proposed adjustment.

Energy Mix for May: Hydropower Leads

The report also breaks down the energy mix for the month of May:

  • Hydropower: 37.98%

  • Local coal: 11.08%

  • Imported coal: 6.24%

  • Furnace oil: 0.16%

  • Local gas: 6.92%

  • LNG (imported): 16.99%

  • Nuclear energy: 15.77%

This composition indicates a continued reliance on cleaner sources like hydropower and nuclear, though imported fuels remain significant in overall cost structures.

Increase Will Reflect in Upcoming Bills

If NEPRA greenlights the request, the additional Rs. 0.10/unit will be passed on to electricity consumers in their upcoming bills under the standard monthly FCA mechanism.
