London: British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has named London Mayor Sadiq Khan among the latest recipients of life peerages, paving the way for him to become a member of the House of Lords, the upper chamber of the UK Parliament.
The UK government announced that Khan is one of 26 public figures selected to receive a life peerage, an honour that entitles recipients to sit in the House of Lords, where they can participate in legislative debates, examine proposed laws, recommend amendments and vote on parliamentary legislation.
Sadiq Khan has led London’s City Hall since 2016 and is currently serving his third consecutive term as mayor. Throughout his tenure, he has focused on issues including public transport, affordable housing, policing, environmental policies and economic growth, while remaining a leading figure within the Labour Party.
His appointment to the House of Lords is being regarded as a significant moment in British politics and recognition of his years of public service and contribution to national governance.
Despite receiving a life peerage, Khan will continue serving as Mayor of London, as membership of the House of Lords does not automatically require him to step down from his elected office.
British media reported that the latest round of life peerage appointments forms part of Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s efforts to honour individuals who have made notable contributions to public life and national service since he took office.
