Bishkek : Pakistan and Kyrgyzstan have signed a series of agreements aimed at expanding cooperation in several areas, including trade, security, education, healthcare, environment and technology.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Kyrgyz President Sadyr Zhaparov witnessed the signing ceremony in Bishkek, where representatives from both sides formally exchanged the documents previously agreed upon.
The two leaders also approved a joint statement summarising the major discussions and key outcomes of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s visit to Kyrgyzstan.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is visiting Bishkek for three days to attend the meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation.
Under the agreements, Pakistan and Kyrgyzstan have finalised a diplomatic cooperation programme for 2026-27, which will be carried out by the foreign ministries of both countries.
The Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad and Kyrgyzstan’s National Institute for Strategic Initiatives signed an MoU to promote joint work in strategic research and related academic areas.
Both countries also reached an understanding on transit trade to facilitate the movement of commercial goods and improve transportation links between the two sides.
Agreements were also signed to expand cooperation in science and technology, while the two countries concluded a treaty on extradition. A draft agreement on mutual legal assistance in criminal matters was also prepared to provide a mechanism for cooperation in legal and criminal cases.
Pakistan and Kyrgyzstan further agreed to work together against the illicit trafficking and trade of narcotics, psychotropic substances and precursor chemicals. An MoU to this effect was signed by the interior ministries of the two countries.
In the health sector, Kyrgyzstan’s Ministry of Health and the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council signed an MoU aimed at strengthening cooperation, particularly in the area of medical education.
The education ministries of Pakistan and Kyrgyzstan also entered into an agreement designed to expand collaboration and exchanges in the education sector.
Environmental cooperation was strengthened through an MoU between Kyrgyzstan’s Ministry of Natural Resources, Ecology and Technical Supervision and Pakistan’s Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination. The agreement focuses on joint efforts related to environmental protection and climate change.
The National Defence University of Pakistan and Kyrgyzstan’s National Institute for Strategic Initiatives agreed to cooperate in academic research and other areas of mutual interest.
In the emerging virtual assets sector, an MoU was signed between Kyrgyzstan’s National Agency for Virtual Assets and Blockchain Technologies and Pakistan’s Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority to encourage cooperation in virtual assets and blockchain-related matters.
Pakistan and Kyrgyzstan also agreed to establish a sister-city partnership between Lahore and Osh, paving the way for greater interaction and cooperation between the two cities.
In the postal and e-commerce fields, OJSC Kyrgyz Post and Pakistan Post signed a bilateral agreement aimed at developing mutually beneficial cooperation.
Meanwhile, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Kyrgyz Republic and the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry signed an agreement to promote stronger trade, investment and business ties between Pakistan and Kyrgyzstan.
