KARACHI: A major security crisis unfolded at Malir District Jail late Monday night as over 100 prisoners escaped following structural damage caused by recent earthquakes.
The incident turned violent when inmates snatched weapons and engaged in shootouts with security forces, leaving one prisoner dead and eight others injured, including three Frontier Corps (FC) personnel.
Chaos and Violence Erupt
According to Malir SSP, between 500-600 prisoners attempted to flee after earthquakes damaged the prison walls. Inmates broke through weakened structures and overpowered guards, seizing firearms and initiating gunfire exchanges.
Security forces quickly responded, managing to recapture 73 escapees while launching a massive search operation for the remaining fugitives.
High-Level Response Initiated
Sindh’s Home Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar and Prisons Minister Ali Hassan immediately took notice, ordering a province-wide manhunt.
Rangers and FC personnel established checkpoints across Karachi, with DG Rangers Sindh personally overseeing operations. Authorities confirmed the jailbreak was exacerbated by prisoner panic during repeated seismic activity, which caused critical structural failures in the facility.
The incident has prompted a full security audit of Karachi’s prisons, with officials vowing to identify negligence. As the manhunt continues, the city remains on high alert with increased patrols and highway checkpoints.
