Lahore: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has proudly announced the successful completion of what is being hailed as Pakistan’s largest-ever rescue operation in response to the catastrophic flooding in the province. This statement was made during a high-level review meeting of flood relief operations in Lahore.
In her address, Maryam Nawaz detailed the extensive efforts that went into the operation, stating that despite the challenging situation caused by India’s opening of spillways, which led to river overflow, the provincial government had proactively planned and coordinated relief efforts. “Our swift actions ensured the safe evacuation of over 600,000 individuals to safer locations, effectively saving many lives,” she said.
The Chief Minister also highlighted the rescue of over 450,000 livestock, marking a significant achievement for the operation. “This operation wasn’t easy, but thanks to the tireless dedication of our teams, we managed to secure thousands of animals and move them to safe havens,” she stated.
Expressing her deep appreciation for the role played by the Pakistan Army in the rescue mission, she said, “The army’s support has been invaluable, and we are truly grateful for their unwavering assistance in ensuring the safety of our citizens. Our gratitude for their selfless efforts knows no bounds.”
Maryam Nawaz also addressed the situation at the Kartarpur Gurdwara, which had been severely flooded, with water levels reaching 12 feet. “In just 24 hours, we completed the water drainage and cleaned up the sacred site. I would like to commend the Deputy Commissioner of Narowal for overseeing this process so efficiently,” she added.
Turning her focus to other vulnerable regions, she raised concerns about areas like Jhang, Multan, Muzaffargarh, Okara, and Sahiwal, which are likely to face flood-related impacts. “I have instructed local administrations to ensure that boats and other necessary supplies are deployed immediately to safeguard residents in these districts,” she noted.
In her concluding remarks, the Chief Minister emphasized the importance of health interventions, urging that vaccination and medical supplies be prioritized. “We are committed to ensuring that flood-affected communities receive the medical care they need to prevent further health risks,” she said.
