India announces to reopen its embassy in Afganistan’s Kabul

Kabul/New Delhi : India has announced the full restoration of its diplomatic relations with Afghanistan by reopening its embassy in Kabul. This important step marks the beginning of a new chapter of cooperation between India and the Afghan government.

The announcement was made by India’s External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar during a joint press conference with Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi. Jaishankar stated that the Indian Technical Mission in Kabul has now been upgraded to a full embassy.

He added that India will continue to support Afghanistan in the health and development sectors. India plans to provide 20 ambulances, modern medical equipment, vaccines, and cancer medicines. In addition, six new development projects in Afghanistan have been announced.

During the press conference, Amir Khan Muttaqi welcomed India’s decision and assured that Afghan territory will not be used for any activities against India.

Muttaqi said, “We seek strong and stable relations with India and will ensure full security for its diplomatic staff.”

India had closed its embassy in Kabul in 2021 due to security concerns following the Taliban’s return to power and the withdrawal of US forces. For almost ten months, there were no formal diplomatic contacts between the two countries.

Later, after receiving security assurances from the Taliban, India sent a technical team to Kabul, which has now been upgraded to a full embassy.

Although India has reopened its embassy, it has not formally recognized the Taliban government. Russia remains the only major country to officially recognize the Taliban, while most nations remain cautious.

India’s move is seen as a step toward rebuilding trust with Afghanistan and opening new diplomatic opportunities in the region. Further developments in bilateral relations are expected in the near future.
