Punjab PDMA Issues Important Advisory Ahead of Monsoon Season

ISLAMABAD: Punjab’s Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a crucial advisory in light of the upcoming monsoon season and potential flood risks.

DG PDMA Irfan Ali Kathia has directed all commissioners and district coordination officers (DCOs) across the province to prepare for increased rainfall and possible flash floods.

This year, monsoon rains are forecasted to be 25 percent above normal, with Lahore, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Gujrat, and Rawalpindi expecting 40 to 60 percent higher than usual rainfall.

The advisory emphasizes the urgent need to spread awareness among vulnerable districts regarding urban flooding and flash flood risks.

Measures for Public Awareness and Safety

PDMA has instructed the installation of pamphlets, streamers, and banners to educate the public about monsoon risks and flood preparedness.

Villages adjacent to rivers and streams should use mosque announcements to alert locals about possible dangers.

The use of loudspeakers is also mandated to broadcast timely warnings about potential flooding.

District Information Officers have been tasked with conducting comprehensive awareness campaigns through print, electronic media, and social media platforms to ensure widespread public information dissemination.

The PDMA spokesperson highlighted that extensive social media efforts are already underway to reach a broader audience.

Government Preparedness and Public Cooperation

DG Irfan Ali Kathia conveyed that the Punjab government is fully prepared to safeguard both people and livestock during this season.

The public is urged to avoid crossing streams and nullahs during flood situations to prevent casualties and property loss.

Citizens are encouraged to cooperate with authorities and report emergencies through the PDMA helpline at 1129.

The government assures that all necessary arrangements are in place to manage any flood-related challenges effectively.
