Proteas Return Home as Test Champions After Historic Win

ISLAMABAD: Thousands of jubilant fans gathered at Johannesburg’s main airport on Wednesday to welcome home the South African cricket team, who returned as World Test Championship (WTC) winners after defeating Australia in a memorable final at Lord’s.

Under the leadership of captain Temba Bavuma, the Proteas clinched a five-wicket win, ending a 27-year wait for a major ICC trophy.

Emotional Homecoming for Victorious Squad

Coach Shukri Conrad and skipper Bavuma led the team into the arrivals lounge, proudly holding the

WTC Mace as the crowd erupted in cheers.

The players, each carrying bouquets, mingled with supporters, shook hands, signed autographs, and posed for photos in an atmosphere of national pride.

Opening batsman Aiden Markram, who rebounded from a first-innings duck to score a match-winning 136 in the second innings, was hailed as a hero.

Fast bowler Kagiso Rabada, with nine wickets in the final, also received praise for his critical role in securing the win.

Supporters like Brian Gabela and Mandy Tshabalala, both long-time Proteas fans, expressed emotional relief and joy.
Gabela said, “They’ve suffered so many heartbreaks over the years. Now we are champions of the world.”
Tshabalala, who attended with her teenage son, added, “It’s been a long wait, but we finally have a team that delivered.”

Zimbabwe Tour Up Next With Fresh Faces

Following the celebrations, South Africa will begin their next assignment on June 28 against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo.

While Bavuma continues to lead the side, key players like Markram and Rabada are being rested.

The squad features five uncapped players, including teenage sensation Lhuan-dre Pretorius and batting talent Lesego Senokwane, both standout performers in recent domestic competitions.

These promising newcomers recently debuted for South Africa A and are expected to bring fresh energy to the Test side.

The Proteas will also participate in a T20 tri-series with Zimbabwe and New Zealand after the Tests.
