Pakistan to Celebrate Eidul Azha on June 7 as Zilhaj Moon Remains Unseen

ISLAMABAD: The Central Ruet-i-Hilal Committee (RHC) announced on Tuesday that the Zilhaj moon was not sighted anywhere in the country, confirming that Eidul Azha will be observed on Saturday, June 7.

The declaration was made following an official meeting of the committee held on the rooftop of the Kohsar Block in Islamabad, which houses the Ministry of Religious Affairs.

The announcement was delivered by RHC Chairman Maulana Abdul Khabeer Azad, who stated that no credible moon-sighting testimonies were received from any region. “After consulting zonal committees and experts from relevant departments, it was unanimously agreed that the first day of Zilhaj 1446 AH will fall on Thursday, May 29,” he said during a press briefing.

Experts and Observations During the Meeting

The RHC meeting was attended by key experts, including Dr. Mohammad Hasan Ali from the Pakistan Meteorological Department, Shaukatullah Khan from Suparco, and Zainul Abedin representing the Ministry of Science and Technology.

Despite collaborative efforts and the presence of officials in provincial capital headquarters, no moon sightings were reported. According to Maulana Azad, cloudy weather in many regions further diminished the chances of sighting the new moon.

Earlier forecasts by Suparco had predicted a low probability of moon visibility on May 27, even under ideal conditions. This prediction proved accurate, aligning with the final decision by the Ruet-i-Hilal Committee.

Eidul Azha and Its Significance

Eidul Azha, observed on the 10th of Zilhaj, holds immense religious significance as it coincides with the conclusion of the annual pilgrimage of Hajj.

Also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, it commemorates Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to divine command. The occasion is marked by special prayers, animal sacrifices, and acts of charity across the Muslim world.

With the official confirmation, citizens across Pakistan now prepare for one of the most important Islamic festivals, scheduled for June 7, 2025.
