ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and France have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral economic cooperation, focusing on climate action and sustainable development goals.
This understanding was reached during a meeting in Islamabad between French Ambassador Nicolas Galey and Pakistan’s Minister for Economic Affairs, Ahad Cheema.
Expanding Development Projects and Cooperation
The meeting also included Vincent Thevenot, Country Director of the French Development Agency (AFD). Minister Cheema expressed appreciation for France’s continued support, highlighting that French assistance has been instrumental in sectors such as energy, urban development, municipal services, and technological innovation.
Currently, 14 projects are underway with the backing of the French Development Agency, and seven additional projects are awaiting approval. The minister expressed optimism that these pipeline projects will soon receive the green light from the AFD Board.
Focus on Rural Development and Climate Resilience
Minister Cheema underscored the importance of initiatives like the Rural Development and Climate Resilience programs targeting Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
He also pointed out the Urban Wastewater Governance Project aimed at improving infrastructure in Punjab’s major cities.
Ambassador Galey assured full support from the French government and AFD for Pakistan’s development priorities, reaffirming France’s commitment to close cooperation and timely execution of ongoing and upcoming projects.
The ambassador also acknowledged the importance of Pakistan’s GSP-plus status, a preferential trade arrangement that enhances Pakistan’s export access to the European Union, and thanked Pakistan for its continued engagement.
This renewed partnership highlights the growing economic ties between the two countries and their shared dedication to sustainable growth and climate goals.
