ISLAMABAD: The Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee will meet today (Thursday) to sight the Muharram moon, officially marking the start of the new Islamic year.
The meeting will be chaired by Committee Chairman Maulana Abdul Khabeer Azad at the deputy commissioner’s office in Quetta.
Simultaneously, zonal and district committees will also hold sessions at their respective headquarters across Pakistan.
The final decision on the moon sighting will be announced by Maulana Azad.
Significance of Muharram
Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, holds immense religious and historical value for Muslims.
It is one of the four sacred months in Islam and is especially revered for the events of Karbala, where Imam Hussain (RA) and his companions were martyred.
The month marks a time of reflection, mourning, and religious observances.
SUPARCO Predicts Favorable Conditions
Pakistan’s national space agency, SUPARCO, has indicated that the new moon is likely to be visible today.
According to a spokesperson, the moon was born on June 25 at 3:32 pm, and by sunset today, it will be over 28 hours old — a duration favorable for sighting.
This scientific projection supports the possibility of Muharram beginning on Friday.
