Tragedy Strikes as Swat River Flood Claims Nine Lives, Six Still Missing

ISLAMABAD: At least nine people drowned and six remain missing after the flooded Swat River swept away 18 tourists, including a family of ten, in a devastating incident near Khwazakhela, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, on Friday.

Rescue efforts are ongoing, with 80 personnel deployed in a challenging mission due to the river’s dangerously strong currents. So far, three individuals have been pulled out alive.

Ignoring Warnings Led to Disaster

Swat Assistant Commissioner Nida Iqbal confirmed the rescue operation began immediately after reports emerged.

She reiterated that a ban on swimming and riverside visits had already been imposed due to rising water levels.

Despite these warnings, the group ventured too close to the river, resulting in the catastrophe.

Victims include tourists from Sialkot and Mardan. The deceased are being returned to their hometowns, while the rescued have been safely sent home.

PM Shehbaz Orders Enhanced Safety, NDMA Issues Alerts

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed deep sorrow and directed authorities to expedite the search for missing persons.

He also instructed for stronger safety protocols near rivers and streams nationwide.

Meanwhile, the NDMA has warned of continued flash flooding and landslides in KP, Gilgit-Baltistan, and northern Punjab due to ongoing monsoon rains until June 28.

The agency urges the public to avoid flood-prone areas, especially riverbanks and slopes.

Authorities have re-enforced Section 144, banning access to riverside areas in Swat.

Torrential rainfall has also triggered floods across Lower Dir and Swat, stranding locals and damaging infrastructure.
