ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif on Saturday held a telephonic conversation with Chairman of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), Lieutenant General Inam Haider Malik, to assess the current rainfall situation and review national disaster preparedness.
During the call, the NDMA chief updated the prime minister on recent weather developments and the potential risks posed by heavy rainfall across various parts of the country.
He outlined the proactive measures being taken by the authority to address challenges related to flooding, especially in vulnerable regions.
The prime minister instructed the NDMA to remain in continuous contact with all provincial governments, particularly those in upper regions where the risk is heightened.
He emphasized the need for close coordination with local rescue teams, district administrations, and provincial disaster response agencies to ensure a swift and effective response.
In addition, he directed that timely weather-related alerts and public safety information be shared with citizens via mobile phone messaging.
NDMA Issues Weather Alerts for Several Regions
Prior to the PM’s call, the National Emergencies Operation Center (NEOC) under NDMA had released impact-based weather alerts for multiple areas of Pakistan.
The alerts warn of potential heavy rainfall, urban flooding, glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs), and related hazards expected within the next 24 to 48 hours.
These developments raise serious concerns for low-lying urban zones and communities near glacial regions, where weather-related disasters could cause significant damage.
National Preparedness Measures Underway
As part of its disaster management strategy, NDMA is enhancing coordination with relevant departments and emergency services.
The goal is to reduce human and infrastructural losses by ensuring quick response mechanisms are in place.
Efforts also include updating early warning systems and mobilizing relief supplies in potential high-risk areas.
