Lahore: Following sudden and heavy rainfall in Lahore and other cities, drainage operations have been accelerated. All WASA employees have had their leaves canceled and have been deployed in the field to ensure speedy water drainage.
Additional machinery has been provided to WASA Lahore under the directives of Punjab Housing Minister Bilal Yaseen and the Secretary of Housing. Municipal Corporation areas are also receiving full support for drainage efforts.
Strict Field Supervision and Safety Measures
Following orders from the Chief Minister of Punjab, the Housing Minister and Secretary themselves are present in the field, with all officers continuously monitoring the operations. Low-lying and densely populated areas are being cleared on a priority basis.
Instructions have also been issued to install protective barriers and warning signs at construction sites to prevent accidents.
Rainfall Situation and Climate Concerns
Lahore experienced approximately seven hours of rain today, during which 200 millimeters of rainfall was recorded. Thirteen underground water tanks in the city have been activated to improve water drainage. Similar drainage efforts are ongoing in Gujranwala, Faisalabad, and other cities.
Housing Minister Bilal Yaseen expressed concerns over the possibility of extended rainfall due to climate change and emphasized the need to strengthen the drainage system accordingly.
Current Situation and Future Steps
Major roads in Lahore have been cleared, with drainage operations still ongoing in some areas. It is expected that the entire city will be completely cleared of water within the next few hours.
Drainage operations are continuing uninterrupted across the province, supervised by Secretary Housing, Noor-ul-Amin Mengal.
