Karachi: The Pakistan Navy is observing “Hangor Day” today, commemorating the bravery of the crew of the submarine Hangor and Pakistan’s strong naval defense during the 1971 war. The day symbolizes a historic victory that crushed the enemy’s naval superiority.
On December 9, 1971, the submarine Hangor sank the Indian Navy’s ship Kharag and severely damaged Kripan, completing an unforgettable operation. This achievement marked a significant chapter in Pakistan’s naval history and demoralized the enemy forces.
Chief of Defence Forces, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, praised the courage and skill displayed by Hangor’s brave crew, stating that their actions continue to serve as a symbol of naval defense. He emphasized that during the 1971 conflict, the Pakistan Navy was an impenetrable wall against the enemy at sea and remains a strong protector of the country’s borders today.
Pakistan Navy Chief Admiral Naveed Ashraf announced that, in keeping with the Hangor legacy, eight new Hangor-class submarines will soon be inducted into the fleet, further strengthening Pakistan’s maritime defense capabilities.
To mark Hangor Day, the Pakistan Navy has also released a special documentary titled “Hadaf,” which educates the nation on bravery and the defense of the homeland.
