Lahore : The Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) has implemented a new policy requiring all solar energy users to install AMI (Advanced Metering Infrastructure) meters, replacing conventional metering systems for solar connections.
In an official notification issued by LESCO, it was stated that only AMI meters will now be approved and installed for all existing and new solar setups. The decision has been taken to improve efficiency, transparency, and monitoring of electricity usage among net-metering consumers.
According to sources, the cost of an AMI meter has doubled from around PKR 35,000 to PKR 70,000, raising concerns among solar consumers already facing rising energy costs. This sudden price hike is expected to place an additional financial burden on users who are shifting to solar energy as an alternative to grid power.
Adding to the impact, new solar connection applications have been temporarily suspended, following directives from the Ministry of Energy. Officials claim this pause will allow time to streamline the new system and prevent misuse or unmonitored energy feedback into the grid.
The policy shift comes amid growing national efforts to promote renewable energy. However, the move has triggered criticism from consumers and energy advocates, who argue that instead of making solar more accessible, such measures may discourage clean energy adoption.
Meanwhile, LESCO has clarified that the introduction of AMI meters is part of a long-term strategy to digitize the power sector and curb electricity theft and losses.
