Pakistan’s UN Roles Highlight Global Trust in Counterterrorism

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s recent appointments to key United Nations committees underscore the international community’s growing confidence in the country’s counterterrorism efforts, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced on Thursday.

These prestigious roles validate Pakistan’s commitment and active participation in the global fight against terrorism.

Pakistan was named chair of the committee under UN Security Council Resolution 1988 (2011), responsible for overseeing sanctions on the Afghan Taliban.

Additionally, Pakistan will serve as vice chair of the Security Council’s Counter-Terrorism Committee (CTC), which monitors compliance with Resolution 1373 (2001), a critical part of the UN’s counterterrorism framework.

The country will also co-chair two subsidiary bodies: the Informal Working Group on Documentation and the new Working Group on Sanctions.

Strengthening Pakistan’s Global Counterterrorism Role

In a statement on social media platform X, Prime Minister Shehbaz called the appointments “a matter of great pride,” emphasizing that they reflect global trust in Pakistan’s unwavering dedication to combating terrorism.

He highlighted Pakistan’s heavy sacrifices, with over 90,000 casualties and economic losses exceeding $150 billion, underscoring the country’s frontline role in this global challenge.

The Pakistan Mission to the UN described the appointments as a “significant diplomatic development” and an acknowledgment of the country’s constructive engagement as an elected Security Council member.

Pakistan reiterated its commitment to the UN Charter’s principles and to collaborating with international partners in addressing terrorism worldwide.

Key Role Amid Rising Global Tensions

Pakistan’s current two-year term on the UN Security Council, its eighth, coincides with heightened conflicts in regions such as Gaza, Kashmir, and Syria. Elected to fill an Asia-Pacific seat, Pakistan will preside over the council in July, offering a vital opportunity to influence the international agenda.

During a recent parliamentary delegation’s visit to the UN headquarters, Pakistani officials briefed diplomats on concerns regarding India’s escalating rhetoric and actions in the region.

The delegation stressed Islamabad’s commitment to peace and willingness to engage in dialogue with India, including on counterterrorism cooperation, to reduce regional tensions and promote stability in South Asia.Counterterrorism, Pakistan, UNSC
