Pakistan to Preside Over UN Security Council in July

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is set to assume the presidency of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) in July 2025, during its two-year term as a non-permanent member that began on January 1, 2025.

Permanent Representative Asim Iftikhar Ahmad met with UN Secretary-General António Guterres on Wednesday to discuss the council’s agenda.

He outlined Pakistan’s commitment to steering Security Council proceedings in a transparent, open, and consultative manner.

The meeting also covered regional tensions, with particular focus on the deteriorating situation in the Middle East.

UNSC Term Backed by Strong Global Support

Pakistan was elected to the Security Council in June 2024 with overwhelming support—securing 182 of 193 votes from UN member states.

This marked a strong endorsement of Pakistan’s diplomatic standing and commitment to multilateralism.

Focus on Peace and Diplomacy

Asim Iftikhar reiterated Pakistan’s role as a responsible global actor dedicated to promoting peace and international cooperation.

He assured that Pakistan’s presidency would reflect the aspirations of all member states, prioritizing conflict resolution and inclusive dialogue.
