President, PM highlight Pakistan’s contribution to UN peace efforts

Islamabad: President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif have reaffirmed Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to international peace on the occasion of the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers.

In his message, President Zardari extended solidarity to UN peacekeepers deployed across the globe, appreciating their role in promoting stability and security in conflict-affected regions.

He also paid rich tribute to 183 Pakistani personnel who embraced martyrdom while serving under the United Nations in various peacekeeping operations.

The president highlighted that Pakistan is host to one of the earliest UN missions, the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP). He said its continued presence reflects the importance of a peaceful resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute in line with UN resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.

In a separate statement, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said Pakistan’s participation in UN peacekeeping missions demonstrates its long-standing dedication to global peace, security, and international cooperation. He also honoured peacekeepers serving under the UN flag worldwide.

The theme of this year’s observance, “Invest in Peace,” calls for sustained global commitment, political will, and financial resources to ensure lasting peace and protection of human lives.
