ISLAMABAD: A powerful explosion at a chemical plant in China’s eastern Shandong province killed at least five people and injured 19 others on Tuesday, according to Chinese state broadcaster CCTV.
The blast, which occurred around noon at the Gaomi Youdao Chemical Co. facility in the city of Weifang, also left six individuals missing and triggered a large-scale emergency response.
The explosion was so intense that it shattered windows over three kilometers away, and the shockwaves were felt by residents as far as seven kilometers from the site.
Eyewitness footage circulating on Chinese social media showed a towering plume of black smoke rising from the factory area, while sirens echoed across nearby neighborhoods.
One resident, who requested anonymity, reported his house shaking from the blast and described a “column of smoke rising high into the sky.”
Factory Profile and Emergency Response
The Gaomi Youdao Chemical Co. is located within an industrial park and primarily manufactures pesticides and medical-use chemicals. Corporate records indicate the company employs over 500 workers.
The full scale of the damage to the facility and its surrounding area remains under investigation.
Authorities dispatched over 230 emergency personnel, including firefighters and medical teams, to control the blaze and rescue victims. Search operations are ongoing for the six individuals who remain unaccounted for.
The local government has launched an inquiry to determine the cause of the explosion and assess whether safety regulations were violated.
Safety Concerns in China’s Chemical Sector
China’s industrial sector, particularly chemical manufacturing, has a history of safety incidents due to lax enforcement of regulations and insufficient risk management protocols.
Major blasts in the past, such as the 2015 Tianjin warehouse explosion, have led to public outcry and calls for tighter oversight.
This latest tragedy has reignited concerns over workplace safety standards in hazardous industries. Authorities are expected to scrutinize operational practices at the Gaomi facility and may issue sanctions or closures depending on the investigation’s findings.
