Punjab on high alert as CM Maryam Nawaz orders precautionary measures ahead of heavy rains

Lahore: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has directed all concerned departments to remain on high alert in view of forecasted heavy rains, potential cloudbursts, and possible flash floods across the province.

The Chief Minister has instructed the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), local administrations, police, and rescue teams to take immediate pre-emptive measures. She also ordered all Deputy Commissioners and relevant officials to remain present in the field to closely monitor the situation and respond promptly to emergencies.

Maryam Nawaz emphasized strict compliance with the guidelines issued by the PDMA and called for special preparations in northern Punjab due to the increased risk of cloudbursts.

She particularly highlighted the need for proactive steps in districts such as Murree, Rawalpindi, Jhelum, Chakwal, and the Koh-e-Suleman region, where heavy rains and flash floods are anticipated. It was also agreed to impose temporary restrictions on tourist travel to Murree and nearby areas to ensure public safety.

The Chief Minister directed that public movement, especially of tourists, be limited in areas prone to landslides and heavy downpours. PDMA Punjab has been instructed to prepare in advance for potential surges in river flows, including the provision of boats, life jackets, and other essential equipment to flood-prone communities.

Additionally, she ordered a complete ban on swimming in rivers, canals, and streams due to the threat of high water levels. She further instructed authorities to ensure the evacuation of residents from vulnerable riverbank areas and to increase police patrolling around water bodies.

Parents have also been advised to prevent children from going near rivers or streams during this critical weather period.
