Lahore: Today, on December 5th, the 127th birth anniversary of the renowned and eloquent poet of the subcontinent, Josh Malihabadi, is being celebrated. Josh Malihabadi, often referred to as a shining star of Urdu literature, was born on December 5, 1898, in a family rich in intellectual and literary traditions. His real name was Shabbir Hassan Khan, while “Josh” was his pen name, which he derived from his hometown, Malihabad.
Josh’s poetry was characterized by his mastery of language, the depth of his thoughts, and his yskill in choosing words. He was often referred to as an ocean of words, and his poetry gave a fresh perspective to Urdu literature. Josh began his poetic journey at the age of just 9, and over time, he elevated his poetry to an individualistic and esteemed position.
Some of his notable works include “Shola-o-Shabnam,” “Junoon-o-Hikmat,” “Fikr-o-Nashat,” “Aroos-e-Adab,” “Harf-o-Hikayat,” “Rooh-e-Adab,” “Awarah Haq,” “Sanbal-o-Salsal,” and his autobiography “Yaadon Ki Baraat.” These works not only constitute a significant legacy in Urdu literature but also shed light on his profound personality and thoughts.
Josh Malihabadi was not just a poet, but also a freedom fighter, prose writer, editor, lyricist, and journalist. In 1948, he set a new milestone in Urdu journalism and literature by becoming the editor of the magazine “Aaj Kal.” His literary contributions and editorial work remain a significant part of the history of Urdu literature.
