Basant festival approved for 2026 in Lahore

Lahore : The government has officially given the green light to celebrate the Basant festival in Lahore in 2026. The Deputy Commissioner of Lahore issued a notification confirming the event.

As per the notification, kite flying will be allowed in the city on February 6, 7, and 8, 2026. However, only approved and standard kite flying materials will be permitted during the festival. The production and trade of these materials will be authorized from December 30, 2025, to February 8, 2026, while public sales can take place between February 1 and February 8, 2026.

The district administration has clarified that only registered vendors will be authorized to sell kite flying materials. The registration process for manufacturers, traders, and sellers started on December 29, 2025, and can be completed via the E-Biz app or the official Basant Punjab website (basant.punjab.gov.pk).

Additionally, the notification enforces a complete ban on the use of “Charkhi” (spinning tops) and prohibits the use of metal wires, nylon, plastic, and sharp kite threads (manja). Only cotton thread that meets specific standards will be allowed. There will also be restrictions on the size and number of kites.

Registered vendors are required to display their registration certificates at visible locations and maintain detailed records of stock, sales, and material movements.

The district administration has stated that these regulations are designed to ensure a safe celebration of Basant while safeguarding the lives and property of citizens.
