Washington : Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Thursday during the opening session of the Board of Peace in Washington. The leaders discussed expanding trade relations, boosting economic collaboration, and strengthening joint efforts to fight terrorism.
According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office, Sharif was accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar. The prime minister congratulated President Donald Trump and Secretary Rubio on the launch of the Board of Peace and reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to supporting the Gaza Peace Plan. He emphasized the importance of continuous high-level engagement between Islamabad and Washington to address shared priorities in today’s dynamic global environment.
The US State Department noted that Secretary Rubio welcomed Pakistan’s consistent backing of the Gaza Peace Plan and recognized its role as a founding member of the Board of Peace. He also extended condolences over the tragic January 31 attacks in Balochistan and the February 6 bombing in Islamabad, highlighting the importance of ongoing cooperation in counterterrorism.
The meeting also covered Pakistan’s participation in the recent Critical Minerals Ministerial, development of the energy sector, and opportunities for increased US investment in Pakistan.
On social media platform X, Rubio commented, “Met with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif today. Grateful for Pakistan’s continued support of @POTUS’s Gaza Peace Plan and joining the Board of Peace. Discussed strategic cooperation on critical minerals and counterterrorism.”
Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar also shared on X, “Pakistan values its longstanding partnership with the US. We had productive discussions on promoting peace, counterterrorism cooperation, and expanding economic and trade links. We look forward to strengthening our strategic relationship in all areas of mutual interest.”
