Karachi Plunges Into Darkness as Heavy Rains Trip Over 300 Feeders

A powerful spell of monsoon rain accompanied by thunder and lightning hit Karachi early Friday, causing widespread power outages and disrupting daily life in many neighborhoods.

The downpour was reported in multiple areas including Gulshan-e-Maymar, Gulshan-e-Hadeed, Malir, Steel Town, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, and North Karachi.
Other affected localities included Surjani Town, Super Highway, Azizabad, Tariq Road, Malir Cantt, Saadi Town, University Road, Defence, Clifton, and Kala Pul.

Power Disruption and Safety Concerns

The rain caused over 300 power feeders to trip, plunging large parts of the city into darkness.
Neighborhoods like North Nazimabad, Moosa Colony, Shadman, Federal B Area, and Liaquatabad faced extended electricity disruptions.
The outages sparked public outcry and posed serious safety concerns.
Several residents sustained injuries due to electric shocks, highlighting the urgency of power infrastructure upgrades.

Emergency Response and Municipal Measures

In response to the crisis, Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab visited rain-affected zones for inspection.
He ordered the immediate cancellation of all municipal staff leave and directed all departments to remain on high alert.
Municipal authorities were instructed to address drainage issues and restore order to waterlogged neighborhoods as quickly as possible.

The sudden flooding and prolonged power breakdown underscore Karachi’s vulnerability during the monsoon season and the pressing need for sustainable urban planning.
