Dawson Shines After Surprise England Recall

ISLAMABAD: England’s Liam Dawson is embracing a surprise return to international cricket, delivering a standout performance after years in the shadows.

The 35-year-old left-arm spinner, once seen as out of favour, played a pivotal role in England’s 21-run win over the West Indies in Chester-le-Street on Friday.

He claimed 4 wickets for just 20 runs and was named player of the match, making it his best T20 international performance to date.

Speaking after the game, Dawson admitted he had almost given up on wearing the England shirt again.

“I had got to an age where I probably thought international cricket was gone,” he said.

Instead of dwelling on selection, he focused on enjoying domestic cricket, performing consistently for Hampshire.

Returning with Confidence and Impact

Captain Harry Brook showed immediate faith in Dawson, handing him the new ball—an opportunity the veteran grabbed with both hands.

Dawson’s performance also sparked talk of his potential inclusion in next year’s T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka.

Brook praised Dawson’s persistence, calling him an underrated asset who’s been “knocking on the door for years.”

The young skipper also highlighted Dawson’s value in mentoring younger bowlers alongside Adil Rashid.

Their partnership could be key in spin-friendly conditions during the upcoming World Cup campaign.

Focused on Consistency and Team Role

Despite the strong return, Dawson remains grounded.

“I know how cricket works, you’ve got to be consistent and it’s only one game,” he said.

He is looking forward to possibly playing in front of home fans at Southampton, where the final match of the series will be held on Tuesday.

Dawson emphasized the need to stay focused and keep contributing whenever selected.

His calm approach and recent form may just secure him a longer stay in the England setup.
