ISLAMABAD: In a landmark announcement, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait revealed a significant oil discovery in the North Wafra Wara-Burgan field, located just 5 kilometers north of the main Wafra oil field.
The discovery, made by Wafra Joint Operations, signals a renewed momentum in the region’s energy exploration efforts following the resumption of production in the partitioned zone back in mid-2020.
According to the joint statement, crude oil began flowing from the Wara reservoir in the Wara-Burgan-1 well at a rate exceeding 500 barrels per day.
The oil has an API gravity between 26 and 27 degrees, which points to medium-grade quality—an important factor in refining and market demand.
Strategic Energy Gains for Global Impact
This find is not only the first major discovery since operations resumed in the area, but also a powerful testament to the exploration and production capabilities of both nations.
It strengthens Saudi Arabia and Kuwait’s positions as reliable energy providers on the global stage.
The announcement comes on the heels of Saudi Aramco’s disclosure earlier this year of 14 new oil and natural gas fields in the country’s Eastern Region and the Empty Quarter.
Together, these developments underline the Gulf’s renewed focus on boosting oil output amid shifting global energy dynamics and rising demand.
