Islamabad: Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar welcomed the ceasefire agreement signed between Pakistan and Afghanistan, describing it as an important first step toward restoring peace between the two nations.
In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), Dar expressed his approval of the agreement, which was finalized late on Saturday in Doha. He referred to the deal as a “positive first step” in addressing the long-standing issues between Pakistan and Afghanistan.
“We are hopeful that the upcoming meeting, to be hosted by Turkey, will focus on establishing a clear and effective monitoring mechanism to counter terrorism emanating from Afghan territory,” Dar stated. He also acknowledged Qatar and Turkey for their pivotal role in facilitating the negotiations.
The recent border violence between the two countries, which had been fueled by attacks from Afghan Taliban forces and Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants, prompted Pakistan to launch retaliatory airstrikes and ground operations, killing over 200 militants. The temporary ceasefire, agreed upon at Afghanistan’s request, has halted the fighting, which resulted in significant casualties on both sides.
Dar emphasized the need for continued diplomatic efforts to ensure the agreement’s success and prevent further violence. He also stressed the importance of establishing a long-term mechanism to address the root causes of terrorism and ensure peace in the region.
