CoreWeave Joins Google’s Cloud Deal to Power OpenAI

ISLAMABAD: CoreWeave has secured a key role in Google’s new cloud partnership with OpenAI, highlighting the growing demand for computing power in the AI sector.

CoreWeave, a cloud provider specializing in Nvidia GPU-based services, will supply compute capacity to Google Cloud, which will then provide these resources to OpenAI.

Google will also contribute some of its own computing infrastructure to support OpenAI’s expanding AI models, including ChatGPT.

Strategic Partnership and Industry Impact

This collaboration marks a significant shift in cloud service dynamics, where hyperscalers like Google, Amazon, and Microsoft increasingly partner with specialized “neocloud” firms such as CoreWeave.

CoreWeave, backed by Nvidia and OpenAI, signed a major five-year contract worth $11.9 billion with OpenAI to provide dedicated compute capacity for AI model training and inference.

The deal was recently expanded with an additional $4 billion agreement through 2029, reflecting OpenAI’s surging need for high-performance computing resources.

Benefits for CoreWeave and Google

By adding Google Cloud as a customer, CoreWeave diversifies its revenue base and gains a strong partner capable of supporting its ambitious data center expansion plans.

For Google, this partnership strengthens its cloud unit, which earned $43 billion in sales last year, by leveraging OpenAI’s growth while maintaining a neutral position among cloud competitors.

CoreWeave’s stock has soared over 270% since its March IPO, signaling investor confidence despite initial concerns over its capital structure.

The agreement coincides with Microsoft’s strategic data center reevaluation and ongoing negotiations with OpenAI regarding their investment terms.

This deal exemplifies how the race for AI dominance is reshaping cloud computing alliances and infrastructure investments worldwide.
