Instagram Introduces New ‘Map Feature’, Experts Raise Privacy Concerns

Instagram has rolled out a new Map Feature allowing users to share their real-time location with selected friends. While the feature is designed to enhance local content discovery, tech experts have raised concerns over potential privacy and safety risks.

Similar to Snapchat’s Snap Map, the new feature only displays a user’s location when the app is open or running in the background. It does not provide continuous real-time tracking and remains disabled by default unless the user grants permission.
Privacy Implications:

Digital safety analysts warn that the feature could be misused for harassment, stalking, or unauthorized tracking, especially targeting women, children, and vulnerable users.
How to Adjust Location Sharing:

Users can manage their location sharing settings by:

Opening the Instagram app

Going to Profile → Menu (☰) → Settings → Privacy → Location Sharing

From there, users can turn location sharing on or off as needed

For Parents:

Keep children’s accounts private

Ensure location sharing is turned off

Monitor online activities and educate kids about digital privacy

While the Map Feature offers added interactivity, users are advised to approach it with caution and keep privacy settings tightly managed.
