ISLAMABAD: Tensions between Russia and Ukraine soared yet again after a startling claim emerged from Moscow — Vladimir Putin’s presidential helicopter was allegedly targeted during a high-intensity drone strike by Ukrainian forces.
The incident reportedly took place during Putin’s surprise visit to the Kursk region, a territory along the contested border where Russian forces recently claimed victory over Ukrainian troops.
According to Russian air defense commander Yury Dashkin, the presidential aircraft became the “epicentre” of a large-scale aerial assault.
The commander, in an interview aired on national television, emphasized the increased intensity of Ukrainian drone activity during Putin’s aerial transit, prompting emergency defense maneuvers to protect the head of state.
A Direct Message or Desperate Move?
The Kremlin later confirmed the unannounced trip, noting that Putin met with local volunteers and officials during his time in Kursk.
However, the incident sparked concern and speculation internationally — was this an audacious Ukrainian attempt to eliminate Putin or a symbolic strike to rattle the Russian leadership?
Following the alleged drone threat, Russia retaliated fiercely.
Over the weekend, Moscow launched what is being called the largest air strike on Ukraine in recent months — deploying 367 drones and missiles that tragically left at least 12 people dead, including three children.
The attack underscored the deadly escalation in the conflict, suggesting both sides are ready to push boundaries in this drawn-out war.
